Where the rats come from

The Ver is the backbone of it. Rats dig into the soft banks between Verulamium Park and the Watercress nature reserve, and the silted lakes, with bread thrown for the geese, keep them fed all summer. Away from the water, the bigger colonies live underground. The Victorian streets of Fleetville and Sopwell drain through clay pipe runs well over a century old, and where a joint has cracked or a branch has been left disused, sewer rats have a tunnel to the back of a terrace. In the centre, market days on St Peter's Street leave crates, split bags and dropped food behind. Allotments add compost heaps, sheds on bare earth and ripening sweetcorn, which is why plot holders often spot rats before anyone else on the street.

Signs in older homes

In a Victorian terrace the first sign is usually sound: scratching or a heavier, rolling scurry in the ceiling or between floors, loudest after dark. Rats use the space behind a shared party wall like a corridor, so the noise seems to move from room to room. Outside, look for a smooth-edged hole 6–9 cm across beside a shed base, under decking or at the foot of a garden wall, with a worn track running to it. A sour smell, or droppings under the sink with no hole to the outside, points to a broken drain beneath the kitchen floor. That also answers a common puzzle, rats heard in the walls but never seen in the rooms: they are living in the cavity, the floor void or the drain itself, and have no reason to come out.

How we treat a rat problem

The first visit is a survey, not a bait drop. We follow droppings, smears and gnawing back to where the rats are living and how they reach the house, and we lift inspection chamber covers to look for rats or debris in the drain. If a pipe looks broken, we can arrange a CCTV survey through a drainage firm to find the damaged length. Treatment follows the CRRU Code: bait in locked, tamper-resistant boxes, or traps set in covered tunnels, placed on the runs and out of reach of children, pets and wildlife. Rats shy away from anything new, so we return to check activity, take away bodies and pick up leftover bait. The job ends with proofing, and you are left a note of each product and where it went.

Proofing older houses

Older brickwork gives rats plenty of ways in. Victorian airbricks with cracked or oversized grilles are the usual culprit, and a fine stainless mesh fitted behind the original keeps the look while stopping the traffic. Crumbling mortar low on a wall, gaps where old pipes and cables pass through, and loose boards on a suspended floor get steel wool with mortar or a mesh repair, never expanding foam, which rats chew through. Where they are coming up from the sewer, a non-return valve, often sold as a rat blocker, lets waste out of the drain but stops rats climbing back in. On conservation-area streets such as Hatfield Road, London Road or around Fishpool Street, we pick fixings that are reversible and hard to spot from the pavement, and flag anything that needs a word with the planners.

Keeping rats out

  • Check the airbricks along the base of a Victorian terrace each autumn and replace any cracked grille with one backed by fine steel mesh.
  • If the house drains through an old clay run, lift the inspection chamber cover once a year and get it looked at if you find droppings, standing water or a broken channel.
  • On a plot or in a garden near the Ver, stand the compost bin on paving slabs or weld mesh and keep bread, meat and cooked scraps out of it.
  • Put a concrete base under a shed, or bury a skirt of wire mesh around its edge, because the dry ground beneath is where garden rats dig first.
  • On terraced streets with no front garden, keep food waste in a lidded caddy or wheelie bin rather than loose bags left by the door.

Does the council deal with rats in St Albans?

Rats are active in every month, but October to March is when they most often move indoors. In summer they stay outside, breeding under sheds and feeding around the lakes, so garden sightings rise then instead.

Why can I hear rats in the walls or loft but not see them in the house?

Because they are living in the building's hidden spaces, not the rooms. Terraces and older semis have cavities, floor voids and party-wall gaps that give rats shelter and a route, and many arrive from a broken drain underneath. With food reachable outside or in the void, they have no need to cross a kitchen. Finding that route is the first job.

I rent my home. Who pays to get rid of rats?

In most cases the landlord, because rats usually get in through the fabric of the building: a failed drain, a broken airbrick or gaps in old brickwork. A tenant may be asked to pay where rats are drawn by waste they control, such as split bin bags. Tell your landlord in writing, and check the repair clauses in the tenancy.

How quickly can you come out for rats?
