Local conditions
Ebenezer Howard founded the garden city in 1920 and Louis de Soissons laid it out around green space: a wide grass verge on every road, hedged plots, woodland on the edge. People love it. So do rats.
In Welwyn Garden City the older houses sit west of Parkway, the newer ones east, and on both sides the plots run long, with hedges between neighbours. Rats want exactly that: a shed with a gap underneath, a compost bin against the fence, a bird feeder dropping seed all winter. The hedge bottom becomes a covered run from garden to garden. Most of our work here happens outdoors, removing that cover before anything goes inside.
Sherrardspark Wood is 74.9 hectares of ancient sessile oak and hornbeam on the north-west side of town, an SSSI since 1986. Acorns and hornbeam seed carry a big squirrel population through the autumn. When that crop is finished, the squirrels go hunting for a dry loft, and homes nearest the trees in Sherrards and Handside are the obvious targets. Mice take the same route indoors as the nights cool.
Blocks with communal bin stores bring a separate headache. In April 2020 HertsLive reported Times Square residents saying their bins had been overflowing since the previous October, with bags left in hallways and animals chewing through them. A year later, fly-tipping on Knella Road and Hall Grove made the local press, with foxes tearing sacks apart. Loose food waste is a rat magnet. Shut lids, sealed stores.

AL7 is the eastern half: Peartree, Hollybush, Howlands, Haldens, Hatfield Hyde, Woodhall and the large Panshanger estate built from 1964, plus the business units around Shire Park. Housing is mostly post-war brick terraces, semis and low-rise flats, many sharing a bin store. In AL7 we are mostly called to mice behind kitchen units once autumn arrives, rats feeding on dumped rubbish and overfilled communal bins, and wasps under shed roofs.
AL8 covers the older west side: Handside, Sherrards, the Parkway and Howardsgate centre, Stanborough and out to Lemsford. Here the 1920s and 30s cottages sit on hedged plots behind wide verges, much of it inside a conservation area and under the Estate Management Scheme. Squirrels crossing from Sherrardspark Wood into lofts, rats under sheds at the far end of long back gardens and wasps in hedges fill most of our AL8 visits.

If yours is low in a hedge beside the verge, mark the entrance, keep dogs and children clear, and leave the hedge trimmer in the shed until it has been treated.

Mice come in from October as the verges and field edges cool. In the newer east-side homes, including 1960s and 70s Panshanger, check behind kitchen kickboards where pipes enter the wall. West of Parkway, the older houses give them suspended floors and airbricks to work with. Droppings in a cupboard mean they are already nesting nearby.

Black garden ants nest under patios, path edging and the grass strip between pavement and kerb, then trail indoors through door thresholds from late spring. With a verge outside nearly every house, the town never runs short of undisturbed soil. We treat the nest and the trail, not the kitchen floor. Flying-ant day in summer is harmless and needs no call-out.

In town-centre blocks and the converted factory flats at Griffin Place and the Wheat Quarter, one case can reach the next-door flat through risers and skirting gaps.
